The following
initial computer assignment is due September 13.
It is intended partly to provide an opportunity
for you to familiarize yourself with some of the
Internet tools that we will be using this
semester, and partly to provide me with
information that will be used in administering
the course and in making team assignments for
group projects. Consequently, although the
assignment will not be graded there will be a 25
point penalty for failure to complete it by the
due date. In addition, no credit can be accrued
towards group projects or class participation
until your registration form is submitted. |

Material useful in completing
the steps below can be found by reading pages 1 -
25 and 57 - 63 of "The Internet Guide for Accountants"
by Kogan, Sudit and Vasarhelyi. |
2 |
If you have not already done so,
obtain an e-mail account from the university in
the usual way. |
3 |
Using Netscape, Internet
Explorer, or any other browser available to you,
visit my Home Page at http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~gillett.
Click where indicated to visit the brief
biography page, and click on that page (try the
photograph if you don't want to read the
biography!) to reach the main Departure Board.
From there, select Courses and then choose Fall 2000: Accounting Information Systems. Since this
is the page you will probably need to visit most,
you may wish to bookmark this page if you are
using your own machine. |
4 |
Scroll down the page, noting the
materials currently available (highlighted in
color) and additional materials that will be made
available to you later in the semester (in
black). Print the course Syllabus, read it, and
bring it class with you next time and on
September 13. |

Print the course Timetable, read
it, and bring it to class with you next time and
on September 13. |

Print this Initial Computer
Assignment page. |

Subscribe to the Listserve, so
that you will receive mail related to this class.
You are responsible for anything that I publish
via the Listserve, and the Listserve is archived
as a record of what was published. To subscribe
to the Listserve you should send an e-mail
message to Majordomo@raw.rutgers.edu containing
the text "subscribe sob_ais_2000 myaddress"
where myaddress is your own e-mail
address; there should be no subject heading for
this message. Alternatively, you can use the
Rutgers Accounting Research Center's graphic
interface to do this by visiting the Mailing
List WWW Gateway. For your convenience, a hot
link has been provided on the Accounting
Information Systems 2000 page to enable you
to post messages to the Listserve. Be careful how
you use this. When replying to e-mail from the Listserve, remember to send replies back to the
Listserv only if you want them to go to everyone
who has subscribed. Otherwise, reply directly to
the original sender! |

Visit the class Newsgroup
(Bulletin Board) located at news://rarc.rutgers.edu/rarc.sob.ais.2000.
You can do this by pointing your browser to this
address; if you have your own machine, you can
configure your browser to use this Newsgroup by
default. For your convenience, there is also a
hot link to the Newsgroup on the Accounting
Information Systems 2000 page. You are
encouraged to use this Bulletin Board as a way of
sharing problems, solutions and other matters
with the class. Postings to the Newsgroup will be
considered as an element in determining class
participation for the semester. Be aware that
this is a public forum! |

In order to gain access to the
main textbook for the semester, which is an
on-line text, you will need to register with the
publishers at http://www.cybertext.com.
For your convenience in accessing the text during
the semester, a hot link may be found on the Accounting
Information Systems 2000 page. If you use
this link to register, you will need to move back
one page in Cybertext's site, using the arrow
icon they provide. |

Finally, use the form that I
have provided (via the link at the bottom of the Accounting
Information Systems 2000 page marked "If
you have not already done so, please go to the
following page to register yourself.") to
submit data that will be used to build my grading
database and to allocate students to groups for
the semester. It is essential that you carry out
this step satisfactorily to complete the
assignment. Please do not register yourself more
than once: be sure that you have correctly
answered ALL the questions before you submit the
form by clicking on the button at the bottom.
PLEASE ENTER YOUR ID AS A SEQUENCE OF NUMERICAL
DIGITS WITHOUT "-". BE SURE YOU
CORRECTLY ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ABOUT A.I.S. AND
INTERMEDIATE ACCOUNTING SECTIONS - THE DEFAULT
ANSWER IS "NONE" IN BOTH CASES! (ALSO,
DO NOT FORGET TO SELECT EITHER MALE OR FEMALE!!) |
