The following assignments have been made in the interests of definiteness, and in order to facilitate personal planning. Both acts of volunteerism and requests for specific assignments have been respected. As for the rest, I will certainly be happy to entertain proposals for exchange of assignments between two willing individuals. Students assigned to present textbook chapters should do so on the basis that they are to present a 15-minute overview of a topic that we are not intending to study in detail, so that we will, in a sense, have some understanding of what we are omitting.
Students assigned to present papers should understand that their role is to lead our review of the paper and to guide our discussion. They should anticipate that I will myself be working with them in class to help us wring useful knowledge from the paper, and should understand that their leadership does not absolve other students from reading the paper in advance, and from participating in the ensuing discussion. Our goal here is to help each other learn. Brief written handouts summarizing the main points of papers might perhaps be welcomed by other students, but are not formally required. Similarly, there is in this case no expectation that a formal presentation will be made, or that visual aids will be prepared (although they are not, of course, forbidden if you think they would help you do your job effectively!)
